The gig economy

The gig economy is an environment in which temporary positions are common and organizations contract with independent workers for short-term engagements. It should be no surprised that the gig economy has been on the rise for several years. The annual report from Upwork and the Freelancers Union found that the freelance economy grew to 55 million Americans this year — 35% of the nation’s workforce. However, this trend doesn’t just exist among service workers. We also see it among professionals who have been trained at tops schools and firms. The Upwork study continued that as many as 81% of traditional workers they surveyed said they would “be willing to do additional work outside of [their] primary job if it was available and enabled [them] to make more money.” Findings from Adobe showed that as many as one-third of the 1,000 U.S. office workers they polled had a second job and more than half (56%) predicted we would all have multiple jobs in the future.
Add that fact to another study by Intuit which predicted that by 2020, 40 percent of American workers would be independent contractors and it is no surprise that smart leaders are taking advantage of this trend to source highly qualified knowledge workers.
